SF WEEKLY Night and Day Review of CRASH CABARET

Get in a Crash
By Nirmala Nataraj

You've gotta love the kids at New College of California's Experimental Performance Institute. Equipped with a jaunty arsenal of activist, queer, and experimental work, they'll make you believe, at least for a moment, that art might really have the capacity to change the world. Despite the EPI's claim to relentless innovation, "Crash Cabaret: Where Queers Collide (Heterosexuals encouraged to apply!)" is in keeping with San Francisco's habitual multidisciplinary orgies, mixing burlesque, dance, comedy, music, and film together in a heady brew. But that doesn't make it any less appealing, especially given the topic of the hour (and yes, it is just one hour): back to school. The festivities include moody performance rock by the duo Dreamboat, Where Are You?, as well as the frenzied orchestral maneuvers of Stink (formerly of all-girl band Stink 69). The showcase also includes the spoon-tapping high jinks of funny lady Mina Liccione. You can even get in on the action at the "So You Think You Can Prance" dance-off, or by sharing your old detention woes at the "Fondest or Freakiest" storytelling contest.
